How to Delete Your Character AI Account
Since Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 13, 2026, a lot of users have decided to walk away. If that's you, here's the part most people get wrong: don't delete your account first. Deleting removes the account email and order history that refund requests depend on — do the money and data steps in the right order, then delete.
- Cancel c.ai+ so no new charges accrue.
- Request your refund while your account still exists.
- Export or screenshot your chats — deletion is permanent.
- Delete the account (steps below), and optionally file a GDPR/CCPA deletion request for anything left in backups.
Before you delete: three things to do first
1. Cancel your subscription and request the refund
If you pay for c.ai+, cancel it and file the refund request before deleting. Once the account is gone, proving you were a paying customer gets much harder. 2. Export your chats and character definitions
There is no undo. Copy out the chats that matter, screenshot what you can't copy, and write down the definitions of any characters you created. Every method, including the official GDPR/CCPA data request: How to Export Your Character AI Chats.
3. Decide what "gone" means to you
Deleting the account removes it from normal access — but a company in Chapter 11 can transfer user data to a buyer as part of an asset sale. If that bothers you, submit a formal data-deletion request (GDPR/CCPA) through the C.AI Help Center in addition to deleting the account. It's the strongest erasure right users have, and the company must respond within a legal deadline.
How to delete your Character AI account
- On the web: log in at character.ai → click your profile icon (top right) → Settings → Account → Delete Account → follow the confirmation prompts. You may be asked to confirm via the email address on the account.
- On iPhone / Android: open the app → tap your profile → Settings (gear icon) → Account → Delete Account → confirm.
- If you can't log in (lost access, banned, or the option is missing): submit a ticket at the C.AI Help Center asking for account deletion, from the email address registered to the account. State your username explicitly.
Deleting is permanent. There is no 30-day grace period and no restore. If you only want a break, log out and uninstall the app instead — your account will still be there if the service survives.
Delete account vs. delete a character vs. log out
| Action | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Log out / uninstall | Nothing is deleted. Account, characters and chats stay on Character AI's servers. | You just want distance, or you're waiting to see how the bankruptcy plays out. |
| Delete a character | Removes one bot you created. Your account and other chats are untouched. | Cleaning up creations you're not proud of, without leaving the platform. |
| Delete account | Removes your profile, all characters, all chats, and the subscription link. Permanent. | You're done — after the refund is settled and chats are exported. |
After you delete
- Check your email for a deletion confirmation; keep it. If a charge appears later, it's your proof the account was closed.
- Verify the subscription is really cancelled in Apple / Google Play / your card statement — deleting an account does not always stop an app-store subscription on its own.
- Watch for the asset sale. If Character AI's assets are sold, the buyer typically inherits the service's remaining data and posts a new privacy policy. Deleting before the transfer is cleaner than after.
Where to go next

Take your character with you
The account stays behind — but your character's look belongs to you. CharPix turns your character's description into a portrait, then keeps the same face across any new scene you imagine. Anime and realistic styles both work. Free to start: 10 images, no card required.
FAQ
Should I delete my account before or after my refund?
After. Cancel c.ai+ and settle the refund first — deleting removes the order history and account email that support teams use to process refunds. Delete only once the money question is closed.
Does deleting my account delete my chats and characters?
It removes them from normal access. But copies may persist in backups for a period, and in a Chapter 11 asset sale user data can transfer to a buyer. For a stronger guarantee, file a GDPR/CCPA deletion request in addition to deleting the account.
Can I recover my account after deleting it?
No — deletion is permanent, with no grace-period restore. If you only want a break, log out instead. Export anything you care about before you confirm.
What happens to my data in the bankruptcy?
Nothing has been announced about deleting user data, but in a Chapter 11 asset sale, user data can be transferred to the buyer as part of the deal. Deleting now — plus a formal data-deletion request — is the most control you're going to get.
Is deleting my account the same as deleting a character?
No. Deleting a character removes just that bot. Deleting your account removes your entire profile, all characters, all chats, and your subscription link.
