Character AI Refund: How to Get Your Money Back After the Bankruptcy Filing

Updated October 14, 2026 · 6 min read

On October 13, 2026, Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, saying it plans to sell some of its assets — Forbes reports Disney has bid $20 million for parts of the business. If you pay for c.ai+, you're probably asking the same question thousands of users are asking on Reddit right now: can I get my money back?

Quick answer — do these three things today:
  1. Cancel your c.ai+ subscription so no new charges accrue (steps below).
  2. Request a refund through the platform you paid with — Apple, Google Play, or the C.AI Help Center for web payments. Don't wait for the bankruptcy court.
  3. Export or screenshot your important chats before any service changes.

What actually happened to Character AI?

Step 1 — Cancel your c.ai+ subscription

Cancel first. This stops future billing regardless of how refund requests play out.

  1. Paid on the web: log in at character.ai → open your profile settings → find the subscription / c.ai+ section → choose Manage or cancel subscription. (This is the official flow in the C.AI Help Center.)
  2. Paid via iPhone / iPad: open iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Character AI → Cancel Subscription. Apple bills these, so Character AI support can't cancel them for you.
  3. Paid via Android: open the Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Character AI → Cancel.

Cancelling stops renewal. Your paid features normally remain until the end of the current billing period.

Step 2 — Request your refund

Where you ask depends on where the money went. Check your bank statement or email receipt if unsure.

Apple App StoreGo to reportaproblem.apple.com → sign in → find the c.ai+ charge → Request a refund → reason: "Item didn't work as expected" or "Service discontinued".Good for recent renewals; Apple decides, not Character AI.
Google Playplay.google.com → Account → Order history → find the charge → Request a refund. Within 48 hours it's usually self-serve; after that, contact Google Play support.Good within 48h; decent for recent charges after that.
Web (card / Stripe)Submit a ticket at the C.AI Help Center (support.character.ai → "Submit a ticket"). Explicitly ask for a prorated refund of the unused subscription period and reference the Chapter 11 filing.Unknown — a company in bankruptcy may be slow or refuse. Ask anyway, in writing.

Refund request template (copy & adapt):

"Hello, I'm a c.ai+ subscriber (account email: ___). Following Character.AI's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on October 13, 2026, I'm requesting cancellation of my subscription and a prorated refund of the unused period of my current billing cycle. Order/receipt ID: ___. Thank you."

Last resort — chargeback: if you paid by card and are refused, you can dispute the charge with your card issuer ("services not provided as agreed"). Know that merchants — including Character AI — commonly lock accounts after chargebacks. Use only after the normal channels fail.

Will the bankruptcy process itself refund subscribers?

Realistically: don't count on it. In Chapter 11, customers owed refunds are typically unsecured creditors — they stand behind banks, bondholders and vendors, and often recover little. If a formal claims process opens, you could file a "proof of claim", but that takes months and pays pennies on the dollar in many cases. The payment-platform route above is your practical path.

Step 3 — Save your chats and characters now

Bankruptcy means the service — and its data policies — can change with little notice, especially if assets are sold to a new owner. Character AI does not currently offer a one-click full export, so:

FAQ

Is Character AI shutting down?

No. Chapter 11 is a reorganization, not a shutdown. The app and website keep running while the company restructures and negotiates asset sales. There is no announced shutdown date — but service terms can change during the process, so export anything you care about now.

Can I get a refund for my c.ai+ subscription?

In most cases, yes — but through your payment platform, not the bankruptcy court. Web purchases: submit a ticket to the C.AI Help Center. Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com. Google Play: your order history. Recent renewals have the best chance.

What happens to my characters and chats?

Nothing has been announced about deleting user data. However, in a Chapter 11 asset sale, user data can transfer to a buyer. Save anything important today.

Will the bankruptcy court pay subscribers back?

Unlikely to be fast or full. Customer refund claims are usually unsecured claims in Chapter 11. Acting through your payment platform now is far more realistic.

Should I delete my Character AI account?

Cancel the paid subscription and settle the refund first — deleting the account can complicate refund processing. After that, deleting is a personal call: your data may transfer to a new owner if assets are sold.
