How to Export Your Character AI Chats

Updated October 14, 2026 · 7 min read

After Character.AI's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on October 13, 2026, the most-asked question after "can I get a refund" is: "how do I save my chats?" Months — sometimes years — of conversations live on those servers, and in a bankruptcy, user data can change hands or policies can change overnight.

The bad news first: Character AI has no one-click export button. The good news: with the right order of operations, you can save everything that actually matters in under an hour.

Quick answer — in priority order:
  1. Copy or print-to-PDF your most important chats today (methods below — start with the 3–5 chats you'd genuinely miss).
  2. Save your character definitions as plain text — greeting, definition, example dialogues. This is what actually rebuilds your character elsewhere.
  3. File an official data request (GDPR/CCPA) if you want the complete archive — slow, but it's everything they have on you.

Method 1 — Copy & paste (most reliable)

Best for: your most important chats. Works everywhere, no tools needed.

  1. Open the chat in a desktop browser (character.ai) — the web version is far easier to select from than the app.
  2. Scroll up to load older messages first. Character AI lazy-loads history; long chats only exist on screen after you've scrolled them into view.
  3. Select from the first message to the last (click at the start, shift-click at the end), copy, and paste into a document.
  4. Save as something durable: a .txt or .md file, or a note in a tool you actually back up.

Tedious for dozens of chats — which is exactly why you should triage: most people have 3–5 conversations that matter and fifty that don't.

Method 2 — Print to PDF (best formatting)

Best for: preserving chats exactly as they looked, names and avatars included.

  1. Open the chat on desktop and scroll to load the history you want.
  2. Press Ctrl/Cmd + P → destination "Save as PDF".
  3. If the layout breaks (sidebars, buttons), toggle your browser's reader mode first, or use print preview's "simplified" option where available.

Method 3 — Browser extensions (bulk, but be careful)

Browser extensions exist that scrape Character AI chats into files (the CAI Tools family is the best known). They can dump many chats at once — but treat this as the risky option, especially now:

Method 4 — Official data request (slow but complete)

Privacy laws give you the right to a copy of your data: GDPR if you're in the EU/UK, CCPA/CPRA in California, and similar statutes elsewhere. Companies must provide what they hold on you — typically including chat logs.

  1. Submit a data-access request through the C.AI Help Center (support.character.ai → "Submit a ticket") or the privacy contact in their Privacy Policy, stating you're making a data subject access request for a copy of your personal data, including chat history.
  2. Use the email tied to your account; expect identity verification.
  3. Legally, response windows are usually 30–45 days — though a company in Chapter 11 may be slower. File it now as a backstop; don't rely on it for anything urgent.

Don't forget your character definitions

Chats are memories; definitions are the character. For every character you created (or customized), copy these into a text file:

If you're heading to the SillyTavern/Janitor ecosystem, convert definitions into the PNG character-card format — cards made for one of those apps usually import into the others. Our alternatives guide has a full migration section.

What to do with your exports

Saved files are only half the job. The realistic path most users take:

  1. Rebuild the character on your next platform using the definition you saved. Paste 2–3 of your best exported conversations as example dialogue — it anchors a new model faster than any description.
  2. Keep the archives boring and safe: a folder you actually back up, plain text or PDF, no proprietary formats.
  3. If you were paying, handle the money side too — cancel and refund steps are in our Character AI refund guide.

Give your exported character a face

You saved their words — now save their look. CharPix (built by this site's owner) turns the character definition you just exported into a portrait, then keeps the same face across any new scene — café, beach, cyberpunk street. Paste the definition, lock the face you love, and it's downloadable and yours, whichever platform you end up on. Free to start: 10 images, no card required.

FAQ

Does Character AI have an official chat export feature?

No one-click export exists as of October 2026. A privacy (GDPR/CCPA) data request is the closest thing — slower but complete. For anything important, use the manual methods above today.

Will I lose my chats if Character AI is sold or shuts down?

Possibly. Chapter 11 means assets — including user data — can transfer to a buyer, and terms can change with little notice. Anything you don't save locally is out of your control.

Can I export all my chats at once?

Not through the app. Bulk options are browser extensions (vet carefully — see the warnings above) or an official data request, which takes days to weeks.

Can I import my chats into another chatbot app?

No major platform imports Character AI chat logs. What transfers is your character's definition — greeting, description, example dialogues — which rebuilds their personality elsewhere. Exported chats work best as example dialogue to anchor the new model.

Should I delete my account after exporting?

Only after everything is saved and any refund is settled — deleting can complicate refund processing and is irreversible. See the refund guide for the right order.
