Character AI Charged Me: What to Do About an Unexpected c.ai+ Charge
- Do not delete the app or your account yet. That does not reliably cancel billing and can make your receipt and account details harder to retrieve.
- Find out who billed you: Apple, Google Play, or Character AI on the web. Check the receipt and each store's active-subscription list.
- Cancel through that same biller and save the confirmation, effective date, and a screenshot of the cancelled plan.
- For a duplicate, post-cancellation, or unrecognized charge, gather the evidence below. Request a refund from the biller; contact your card issuer about unauthorized charges or an unresolved billing error.
First: identify who actually charged you
The name on a card statement is only a starting point. The receipt and active-subscription list are more useful because they show who can cancel and refund the payment. Check every Apple or Google account you use, not just the email attached to your Character AI profile.
| Where you find the charge | Who handles it | What to check now |
|---|---|---|
| Apple receipt or iPhone/iPad subscription list | Apple | Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Look for Character AI and its next renewal or expiration date. |
| Google Play receipt or Play subscription list | Google Play | Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Repeat for other Google accounts on the device. |
| Character AI receipt, with no matching store subscription | Character AI web billing | On character.ai, go to Settings → Account → Manage. The official flow emails a secure link to the Customer Portal. |
| No receipt and no active subscription anywhere | Your card issuer, if unrecognized | Ask anyone who shares the card first. If still unrecognized, use your card issuer's official fraud or dispute channel. |
Pending is not the same as posted. A temporary authorization can appear around a renewal or payment attempt. Check whether both transactions actually settle before reporting a duplicate; keep the timestamps either way.
Match your situation to the right action
| What happened | Likely thing to check | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| A trial or promotional plan renewed | The original checkout terms and renewal date | Cancel the next renewal. You can request a refund, but renewal refunds are not guaranteed. |
| Charged after you cancelled | Whether cancellation covered the same store account and preceded the charge | Send the biller your cancellation confirmation, effective date, and the later order ID. |
| Two charges on the same day | Pending versus posted status, another store account, or two subscription plans | If both are completed duplicates, ask the biller to refund one and include both order IDs. |
| Deleted the app or account but charges continued | The original billing channel, not the app's installation status | Cancel with Apple, Google Play, or the web Customer Portal. Keep any deletion confirmation as supporting evidence. |
| You never subscribed | Shared cards, family accounts, and other Apple/Google accounts | If still unrecognized, contact your card issuer and secure the payment method. Do not dispute a charge you know is legitimate. |
Stop future Character AI charges
Cancel where you originally paid. Cancelling normally stops the next renewal; it does not by itself refund a charge that has already happened.
- Web subscription: character.ai → Settings → Account → Manage. Enter the account email in the Customer Portal flow, open the secure link sent to you, and cancel there. Check spam if the email does not arrive.
- Apple: iPhone/iPad Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Character AI → Cancel Subscription. If it shows an expiration date instead of an active renewal, save that screen.
- Google Play: Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Character AI → Cancel subscription. Confirm that it no longer appears as active.
Character AI's official subscription guide separates web and app-store billing. Our Character AI refund guide covers the actual refund request for each route.
Collect this evidence before asking for money back
- Receipt or order ID for every charge you are questioning, including the charge date and amount.
- Cancellation confirmation and its effective date, plus a screenshot of the inactive or expired subscription.
- Statement entries showing pending versus posted status when you believe a charge was duplicated.
- The account email and username, but never your password, full card number, or store session token.
- A short timeline: when you subscribed, cancelled, noticed the charge, and contacted support.
For a web payment, use the Character AI support request form and choose Payments, Billing & Subscription. Ask for one specific outcome: cancel the renewal, reverse a duplicate, or review a charge dated after cancellation.
Refund request or card dispute?
If you recognize the subscription, start with the biller. Apple, Google Play, or Character AI web support can see the order and billing state. Character AI's terms say payments are generally non-refundable except where law requires, so a request is not a guarantee.
If the charge is unauthorized, or a genuine duplicate/post-cancellation error remains unresolved, contact your card issuer using the number or app it officially provides. Give an accurate timeline and the supporting records above. A dispute is not a substitute for cancelling: stop future billing separately, and be aware that a chargeback can affect access to the associated service.

FAQ
Why was I charged after cancelling c.ai+?
Check the cancellation confirmation and effective date, then verify that you cancelled in the same store or account that billed you. A charge dated after a confirmed cancellation needs a billing request with that evidence; deleting the app or a different account does not prove cancellation.
Does deleting Character AI stop subscription charges?
Not reliably. Deleting the app does not cancel a store subscription, and deleting your Character AI account may leave the billing agreement with Apple, Google Play, or the web payment provider untouched. Cancel where you originally paid before deleting anything.
Why do I see two Character AI charges?
First check whether both are posted or one is only pending, and whether more than one store account or subscription plan is involved. If two completed charges are duplicates, send both order IDs and timestamps to the biller and request a refund for the duplicate.
Can I dispute a Character AI charge with my bank?
You can contact your card issuer about an unauthorized or incorrect charge. If you recognize the subscription, try Character AI, Apple, or Google Play first and keep the response. A dispute can affect access to the associated account, so use it for a genuine billing problem rather than as a routine cancellation method.
Where do I report an unexpected Character AI charge?
Report it to whoever billed you: Apple for App Store purchases, Google Play for Android purchases, or the Character AI Help Center for web purchases. Choose Payments, Billing & Subscription and include the receipt, order ID, charge date, and cancellation evidence if relevant.
